ALL REFRIGERATION PLANT USED FOR MINE COOLING HAVE BEEN USED TO COOL WATER, WHICH IS IN TURN USED FOR AIR COOLING OR AS MINE SERVICE WATER. WHEN THESE PLANT ARE SITUATED ON SURFACE, LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER MUST BE SENT INTO THE MINE, AND PUMPED BACK TO THE SURFACE AGAIN. 5 YEARS AGO, IT WAS SUGGESTED TO MAKE ICE ON SURFACE, AND SEND THIS INTO THE MINE. THE PAPER GIVES A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD'S FIRST VERY LARGE ICE PLANT USED FOR MINE COOLING. IT DESCRIBES THE WAY IN WHICH THE ICE FROM THIS PLANT IS USED TO COOL HOT WATER ORIGINATING AT AN UNDERGROUND FISSURE, ANDSHOWS HOW THE USE OF ICE, IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING ADDITIONAL COOLING IN THE MINE, RESULTS IN A CONSIDERABLE SAVING IN WATER USAGE, AND IN PUMPING.
