Summary

The authors developed a closed system for the batch/continous freeze-drying of liquid materials. Two of the drawbacks of Seffinga's method, namely supercooling followed by sudden freezing, and adherence of dried material to the tube surface, were eliminated by the formation of an ice lining. Another drawback, that a substantial part of the liquid poured into the chamber must be drained, was solved through multistage frozen layer formation. All of the stages of freeze-drying can be performed using the closed system developed. The paper discusses the closed system and the behaviour of materials in the freeze-drying process.
