Summary
THE COLD STORAGE INDUSTRY IS A HEAVY CONSUMER OF ELECTRICAL POWER AND THE SHARP RISE IN ELECTRICITY COSTS THAT FOLLOWED THE OIL CRISIS HAS RAISED THE PROPORTION OF THESE COSTS IN THE TOTAL COSTS FOR OPERATING A STORE. IN RECENT YEARS THIS HAS ENCOURAGED NOT ONLY REFRIGERATION CONTROL DEVICES DESIGNED TO LOWER ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION, BUT ALSO THE INTRODUCTION OF DEMAND CONTROL TO LOWER THE BASIC CHARGES. A JAPANESE COMPANY HAS DEVELOPED A COLD STORE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WHICH INCLUDES MONITORING AND SUPERVISORY ELEMENTS. THIS SYSTEM HAS ADOPTED A DISTRIBUTED NETWORK CONFIGURATION IN WHICH THE CENTRAL AND LOCAL UNITS ARE LINKED BY A TWO-LINE MULTIPLEX TRANSMISSION SYSTEM.
