Summary

Three different air distribution systems were tested on the basis of their ability to maintain the best air purity around the operating table; a tracer gas technique was used. A laminar air flow from the ceiling was found to be by far the best performing system of the three, whereas no meaningful differences were found between the other two systems. These two used a traditional diffuser placed next the ceiling in a tilted position, and an innovative system, operating according to the principle of displacement ventilation (fresh air at low velocity is supplied at floor level and evacuated from the ceiling).
