Summary

THE CRYSTALLIZATION OF THE SOLUTE IS DETERMINED BY THE CHOICE OF FREEZING TREATMENT AND THE CRYSTALLIZATION OF THE SOLUTE DETERMINES SUBSEQUENT FREEZE-DRYING BEHAVIOR. THE FREEZING OF AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION CAN BE FOLLOWED, AS GREAVES AND REY HAVE BOTH SHOWN,BY DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS (D.T.A.) AND BY THE MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE. SOLUTES MAY PERSIST IN AMORPHOUS STATES DURING FREEZING AND CRYSTALLIZE DURING A LATER WARMING. CONTINUED WARMING ALWAYS ALLOWS THE SAME CRYSTALLINE SOLUTE TO DEMONSTRATE A WELL-DEFINED EUTECTIC MELTING. THE AUTHOR WILL EXAMINE THE BEHAVIOR OF A NUMBER OF REPRESENTATIVE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS AND SHOW HOW THE CRYSTALLIZATION OF ANY PARTICULAR SOLUTE IS DETERMINED IN PART BY THE CONCENTRATION OF THE SOLUTE IN QUESTION AND THE RELATIVE CONCENTRATIONS OF OTHER SOLUTES. CURRENT UNDERSTANDING ALLOWS TO SEE HOW THE FORMULATION OF A MIXED AQUEOUS SYSTEM CAN DETERMINE THE BEST FREEZING PROCEDURE, THE MAXIMUM E PHYSICAL NATURE OF THE FREEZE-DRIED PRODUCT.
