Summary
Fruits and vegetables have high water content and respire, generating heat. To improve their storability, it is important to prevent drying and respiration by storing them at appropriate temperatures and humidities. A novel cooling system was developed to minimize humidity reduction and maintain storage at high humidity conditions. The system provides cold air at 0-1 °C and 90% or higher relative humidity conditions without humidification or water spraying. To effectively cool the air, a direct expansion microchannel evaporator without a superheated region was used. Superheat is controlled by mixing the evaporated refrigerant with part of high temperature compressor discharge gas. An evaporation pressure regulator is used to maintain the evaporation temperature at about 0 °C and enables the cooler to operate continuously without defrosting. This technology is expected to contribute to a steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables and a reduction in food losses.
