Summary

THE EFFECTS OF HEAT AND OXIDATION ON OILS AND THE REACTION OF OIL WITH THE REFRIGERANT ARE STUDIED. THE LATTER RESULTS IN AN ACIDIFICATION, THE FREEING OF THE ACID FORMED AND A POLYMERIZATION OF UNSATURATED OIL INCREASING ITS VISCOSITY. IRON PLAYS A CATALYZING ROLE AND THE PRESENCEOF MOISTURE INCREASES THE EFFECT OF THE DETERIORATIONS CAUSED BY THE ACID. SYNTHETIC AND MINERAL OILS ARE COMPARED. THE PROBLEMS OF OIL CIRCULATION IN THE CIRCUIT ARE STUDIED AND ADVICE IS GIVEN FOR ENSURING SATISFACTORY CIRCULATION. J.L.
