Summary

A modified crib with breather pipes for extra ventilation was tested for the storage of onions. After 18 weeks at ambient temperature, the modified crib reduced losses due to rotting by 85% compared with the traditional pile. Conventional cribs gave an intermediate result. Weight loss in the modified crib was 47% less than in the traditional method, and the quality was not affected. The reduced losses more than offset the cost of the breather pipes.
