Summary

A NEW COOLING TECHNIQUE USING A SODIUM CHLORIDE-H2 O OR ALCOHOL-H2 O SOLUTION AS AN INTERMEDIATE FREEZING MEDIUM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR BIOMATERIAL CRYOPRESERVATION. THIS METHOD PROVIDES A UNIFORM COOLING RATE AND A REDUCED POST-FREEZING PLATEAU WHICH ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR LIVE MATERIALS PASSING THE CRITICAL TEMPERATURE REGION OF 273 TO 233 K (0 A -40 DEG C) WITHOUT INJURY. PHYSICO-MATHEMATICAL MODELLING AND SOME PRACTICAL ANALYSES ARE ALSO PRESENTED.
