Summary

THIS PAPER OUTLINES THE IMPROVEMENTS AND ADVANTAGES OF A NEW CRYOGENIC CARGO CONTAINMENT SYSTEM DEVELOPED BY GAZ-TRANSPORT. THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF THREE LAYERS OF PLYWOOD BOXES FILLED WITH EXPANDED PERLITE COMBINED WITH TWO INVAR MEMBRANES APPLIED AGAINST THE SHIP'S DOUBLE HULL. THE CRYOGENIC EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY OF THE MEMBRANE TANKS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY IN-SERVICE EXPERIENCE, MODEL TESTS AND THEORETICAL FATIGUE ANALYSIS. FOR A COMPLETE ROUND TRIP OF A 125,000 CU.M LNG CARRIER, THE BOIL-OFF RATE CAN BE REDUCED BY ABOUT 70% IN COMPARISON WITH EXISTING SHIPS. (J. ABSTR. BSRA, GB., 40, N 8, 1985/08, 608, 65,817.
