Summary
A new class of hybrid (heating and cooling) solar collector has been designed, built and tested. The collector combines an adsorption generator and heat removal tubing. The generator uses silica gel and water as the working pair. The cooling cycle is essentially a standard adsorption cycle. The porous bed is connected to a single heat exchanger, which acts as a condenser during the daily stage of the cycle and acts as an evaporator during the nightly stage. The main novelty of this device is the water tubing, which is in close thermal contact to the porous bed. In the afternoon of a sunny summer day, when the condensation stage decays, fresh water is allowed to flow through the tubing, and a vigorous cool down of the porous bed is achieved. Thus, the evaporation stage is enhanced and starts sooner than in common adsorption devices, whose cool down mechanism is natural convection. At the same time, the flowing water is re-circulated and stored as domestic hot water (DHW) A tiny prototype (0.97 m2 collection area) has been incorporated to a facility, which was tested in Burgos (northern Spain). The facility includes two tanks for water storage (DHW and cold water) and a third tank to dissipate the condensation heat. The facility has two operation modes (summer and winter). In summer mode the facility delivers and stores domestic hot water and cold water, as mentioned above. In our experimental campaign solar COP averaged 0.13, and domestic hot water production was 3.1 MJ per day. In winter mode the adsorption generator, the heat exchanger and the condensation tank are idle. The collector operates as a conventional solar collector, to supply domestic hot water and hot water for space heating. The latter can be stored in a separate tank or in the cold water tank; overall efficiency measured in October 2011 was 55%.
