A new hybrid liquid desiccant system with improved wettability plastic tubes.

Summary

Liquid desiccant systems are a good alternative to the conventional air conditioners when latent load constitutes a significant part of the total load or/and when ambient humidity is high. However due to some of the problems related with liquid desiccants, such as its corrosiveness or carry-over, these systems have not been very used yet. This paper presents the advantages and disadvantages of liquid desiccant systems compared with solid desiccant systems. In addition a comparison of hybrid liquid desiccant systems,
which combines liquid desiccant systems with vapor compression or absorption chillers, with conventional air conditioners is included. A summary of the latest developments carried out on this technology is also detailed. Finally a hybrid liquid desiccant system that has been design to mainly avoid the main problem of this technology, corrosion, is presented. Polypropylene tubes with plasma treatment in order to improve its wettability when they are in contact with LiCl-H2O have been used.
