Summary

A NOVEL MIXED VALENCE COPPER PEROVSKITE WITH OXYGEN DEFECT HAS BEEN ISOLATED. THIS PSEUDO-TETRAGONAL OXIDE, CAN BE DESCRIBED BY TWO LIMIT STRUCTURAL MODELS, IN WHICH THE BARIUM AND YTTRIUM IONS ON ONE SIDE, AND THE OXYGEN ATOMS AND ANIONIC VACANCIES ON THE OTHER SIDE ARE ORDERED. THIS OXIDE IS CHARACTERIZED BY A METALLIC BEHAVIOR AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, AND EXHIBITS A VERY CLEAR RESISTIVE TRANSITION AT 91 K BECOMING SUPERCONDUCTOR BELOW THIS TEMPERATURE.
