Summary

A new numerical model was proposed to analyze solid/liquid phase-change heat transfer with/without porous media, and usual (without phase change) transient-natural convection with/without porous media. Calculations were performed to examine the effect of the natural convection on the solidification of pure water (without porous media) around a single cylinder and two cylinders. The numerical results were in good agreement with experimental ones. For the initial water temperature, of 0 deg C, the solidification progresses more efficiently with the single cylinder than with two cylinders, but for the initial temperature (equal to or greater than 4 deg C), the reverse is true.
