Summary

The cold end heat exchanger in a cryocooler is of highest importance for the efficient heat transfer from the applied load to the working fluid. The cooling performance of a 4 K pulse tube cooler was greatly improved by the modification of the cold end heat exchanger. With no heat loads on the first stage, cooling capacities of 760 and 900 mW at 4.2 K were obtained with compressor input powers of 4.8 and 6.0 kW, respectively. The COPs at 4.2 K were correspondingly improved, which are comparable to those of 4 K G-M cryocoolers. A cooling capacity of 960 mW at 4.2 K was obtained with 5 W heat load on the first stage.
