Summary

A remarkable piece of teaching equipment has been designed and built by three part-time undergraduates in Australia. The rig includes a refrigerant compressor operating on 6, 4, or 2 cylinders at variable speed, an air-cooled condenser with variable speed fan, an air-cooling evaporator with circuits in series or parallel and four different expansion valves. An alternative ice-making evaporator can be used. The rig is fully instrumented and can be used to demonstrate or investigate total variation in the capacities of heat exchangers and compressor with different expansion valves. Superheat and subcooling and the effect on heat exchangers can be studied. The rig requirements were defined in collaboration with a German university. D.W.H.
