Summary

Vapor refrigerant overheating is an important source of efficiency loss in small reciprocating compressors. The hotter the gas the higher is the specific work required to achieve the same pressure ratio and mass flow rate. Numerical analyses of gas flow and heat transfer processes inside suction mufflers are helpful in the design of more efficient compressors. In this context, a numerical model is proposal for the analysis of suction process of reciprocating compressors. The present model was developed using a simplified approach for the shell volume and compression chamber, reducing computational cost, and allowing a parametric analysis of the compression process. The model allows investigation of suction process losses taking into account the heat transfer phenomena and dynamic effects caused by pressure pulsations in the compressor shell and suction valve dynamics.
