Absorption in thermal insulation: how much is too much?

Summary

Various practical and relevant performance criteria can be used to establish limits on the maximum amount of absorption that may be acceptable in thermal insulation systems. A summary of these various limits is shown. Analysis shows that thermal performance and corrosion criteria provide the lowest controlling absorption limits, as low as 1 to 2% by volume. Safety criteria (auto-ignition and spontaneous combustion) allow higher values, in the 6 to 12% by volume range while structural support criteria suggest limits as high as 25 to 30% by volume.
