Summary

THE DOCUMENT REPORTS ON RESEARCH AND INVESTIGATION INTO ALTERNATIVES TO CFC BLOWN INSULANTS FOR PANEL USE. SUGGESTED ALTERNATIVES ARE PURE AND IMPURE SILICA, PRECIPITATED SILICA, PERLITE AND FLY ASH, ALL IN EVACUATED PANEL SYSTEMS. THESE SYSTEMS CAN OBTAINA THEORETICAL CONDUCTIVITY APPROACHING 0 BTU.IN/H.FT20 F (0.0072 W/METERK), AND WHEN ASSEMBLED IN FIBREGLASS PICTURE FRAME PANELS FOR PRACTICAL USE YIELD A GREATER THERMAL RESISTANCE THAN THE EQUIVALENT CFC BLONAS THESE ARE NOT OPTIMUM SOLUTIONS AND MUCH WORK IS NEEDED ON MASS PRODUCTION DESIGN AND TECHNIQUES. IT IS NOTED THAT THE SEARCH IS ALSO CONTINUING FOR ALTERNATIVE FOAMING AGENTS. D.W.H.
