Advantages of all-electric transport refrigeration systems.

Summary
The all-electric transport refrigeration system provides various advantages that the mechanical system cannot. Among those advantages that address the loss of charge are the elimination of flexible refrigeration hoses, a reduced refrigeration charge, and a reduced number of braze joints due to the use of electric heat instead of hot-gas heating. Other mechanical system advantages of an all-electric system are the elimination of belts, sheaves, idler pulleys, clutches and reduced run time for the compressor. The advantages that address the cargo quality include the use of operational algorithms for improved capacity and temperature control and the operational flexibility to allow for unique treatment of speciality cargo (for example, fan-only defrost, en-route ripening). This is especially true for multi-temperature units, where a high flexibility of energy management is needed. The continuous technology improvements of the efficiency of electrical generators and motors will allow all-electric units to achieve a global energy consumption close to standard designed open drive systems and even better energy consumption for multitemperature units. An additional important advantage of electrical units is the capability to reduce overall unit noise levels through easier engine encapsulation and less component vibration.
