Air conditioning: comfort or restraint?
La climatisation, confort ou contrainte ?
Author(s) : AUBREE D.
Type of article: Article
Summary
The survey shows that the image of air-conditioning gives rise to attitudes from radical rejection to unconditional acceptance. Nevertheless, one of them appears to play a dominant part now: ambivalence. This is mainly because there are two antagonistic criteria for the comfort that air conditioning is claimed to provide for: a sensory model, and a standard one. Besides, daily experience sometimes contradicts the reference proposed by the models. One discovers especially that the comfort provided by air-conditioning can have unsuspected aspects, disadvantages and constraints, even though it can provide for comfort and freedom.
