Summary

Preliminary analysis has been carried out on air cycle refrigeration for supermarket cases, and for air conditioning systems in buildings and automobiles. For display cases, compressed air, produced and aftercooled in a central plant is ducted to cases where it is expanded and then induces a circulation of case air. For a building, a closed cycle has expanded air ducted to room air heat exchangers and returned to a central compressor. This is a bootstrap system with heat recovery from compressor aftercooling. Automobile cooling uses a compact compressor, bootstrap expander and motor drive on an open system with heat exchange to the radiator coolant. This doubles as vehicle heating when cooling is not required. Advantages lie in no hazardous refrigerant leakage and with heat recovery at a useful temperature. Aircraft high speed turbo designs would be used, nevertheless the inherent low COP of an air cycle would lead to an increase in power, though this may be modified by savings in fans and pumps.
