In 1992, 40 billion cubic meters of oxygen, 43 billion cubic meters of nitrogen and one billion cubic meters of argon were produced and consumed in the USA, Western Europe and Japan. Main applications of these gases (for oxygen: primary metals production, chemicals, fabricated metal products, coal gasification, petroleum refining, health services, clay, glass and concrete, pulp and paper; for nitrogen: chemicals, oil and gas extraction, electronics, primary metals and fabricated metal products, petroleum refining, food industry, glass) and their average annual growth rate through 1996.
