Alternative routes to indirect refrigeration systems, analyses, evaluations and new ideas.

Author(s) : HOOGEN B. van den, JANS R.

Summary

Distributing cold in direct expansion in retail-stores implies a relative high risk of loss of refrigerants. World-wide yearly losses of 30-35% of the refrigerant content are not abnormal in the application. Indirect systems would limit the use of refrigerants but show a considerable increase in power consumption, mainly because of the required pump energy needed to distribute the rather viscous media to the various cases and freezers. The study reveals alternative routes, system designs and shows potentials for energy savings that can compensate the losses that are inherent to indirect systems (ice slurry).
