Summary
This document is the first in a series of three concerning the use of ammonia in refrigerating circuits. The present article situates ammonia in relation to other refrigerants used at present, giving the comparative properties of the different fluids. Aspects such as toxicity and safety are treated. The other two articles will explore the use of ammonia in air conditioning and in commercial applications.
