AN EVALUATION OF THE LONG TERM PERFORMANCE OF HEAT PUMPS.

Author(s) : WERNICK B. J.

Summary

THE SYSTEM INCLUDES A VAPOUR COMPRESSION HEAT PUMP RATED TO SUPPLY 3 KILOW HEAT, A VARIABLE VOLUME THERMAL STORE, A VARIABLE HEAT SOURCE AND SINK. IN THEORY A COP OF 3 MAY APPEAR FEASIBLE BETWEEN 288 AND 333 K (15AND 60 DEG C), HOWEVER, IN PRACTICE, THE PERFORMANCE IS SHOWN TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED. MODELS ARE DEVELOPED TO INCLUDE ALL THE PARAMETERS WHICH MAY INFLUENCE THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE HEAT PUMP AND COMBINED TO GIVE THE OVERALL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE. A COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS WRITTEN TO SIMULATE THE ANNUAL INTEGRATED AVERAGE COP FOR VARIOUS OPERATING CONDITIONS. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE COP COULD BE ABOUT 50% OF THE PRACTICAL RANKINE CYCLE.
