Summary

Experimental studies of both ammonia/water and ammonia/lithium nitrate in a single-stage absorption cooler were carried out using the same heat and mass transfer components. The equipment was originally designed for ammonia/water operation. For the lithium nitrate studies the rectifier was removed and smaller solution accumulators were employed. Generator temperatures ranged from 90 to 140 deg C with evaporator temperatures down to -20 deg C. Condensation temperatures varied from 10 to 35 deg C. Absorption temperatures were between 20 and 55 deg C. Cooling capacities and COP are reduced, but the system is more simple and requires lower steam temperatures. Detailed results are given.
