Summary

A US commercial household refrigerator-freezer unit was modified into a dual-loop system, consisting of two completely separate vapour-compression refrigeration systems. In order to reduce energy consumption, additional modifications were made, such as replacement of compressors, evaporator, condenser, and compressor oil. A 4.3% improvement in energy consumption was eventually obtained from this dual-loop system using R12, compared with the original unit. If the small compressors used in the dual-loop system were to have the same energy efficiency ratio as the original rotary compressor, the energy saving would amount to more than 20%.
