An immunohistochemical study of keloids and keloidal fibroblasts and effects of cryotherapy on proliferation, synthetic activity and immunophenotype of human keloidal and normal fibroblasts in vitro.
Author(s) : DALKOWSKI A., ZOUBOULIS C. C.
Summary
Cryotherapy is considered as a treatment of choice for keloids, but its exact mode of action remains unknown. By developing a reproducible model to perform cryotherapy in vitro the authors investigated the influence on fibroblasts cultures. They could show that cryotherapy not only results in mechanical cell destruction, but also modifies fibroblast activity; it increases proliferation and decreases synthetic activity of keloidal fibroblasts. The authors' findings could be the first step toward a persuasive explanation of the beneficial clinical effect of cryotherapy on keloids. Further, this model could be useful in the overall cryosurgical research through its application on other cell types see also IIR Bulletin, ref. 2000-0523).
