AN IMPROVED METHOD OF PREDICTING HEAT LOADS IN THE FACE ZONE OF STOPES.

Summary

THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NUMERICAL METHOD USED TO ANALYSE THE CYCLICCHANGES IN THE HEAT LOAD EXPERIENCED IN THE FACE ZONE OF GOLD MINE STOPES DUE TO THE CYCLIC NATURE OF THE MINING OPERATION. THIS HEAT LOAD OFTEN FORMS A MAJOR PART OF THE TOTAL MINE HEAT LOAD. A NUMERICAL MODEL OF A CROSS SECTION OF THE FACE ZONE OF A STOPE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. MINING OPERATIONS ARE MODELLED BY DIVIDING THE CYCLE INTO A NUMBER OF DISTINCT ACTIVITIES. IN ORDER TO VERIFY THE THEORETICAL MODELS, DETAILED, CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENTS OF HEAT SOURCES AND SINKS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT, WHICH COVERED A VARIETY OF MINING CONDITIONS, AGAINST WHICH THE NUMERICAL METHOD WAS COMPARED AND FOUND TO BE ADEQUATELY MODELLED.
