Summary

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT HEAT LOAD IN DEEP MINES IS THAT DUE TO THE EXPOSED HOT ROCK SURFACES SURROUNDING THE VARIOUS EXCAVATIONS. THE HEAT FLOW INTO EACH TYPE OF EXCAVATION HAS BEEN STUDIED BOTH EMPIRICALLY AND ANALYTICALLY. THE PAPER IS CONCERNED ONLY WITH THE THEORETICAL WORK. THE LITERATURE IS EXAMINED AND AN OPINION ON THE STATE OF THE ART IS GIVEN. A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF NEW RESEARCH HAS BEEN COMPLETED OR IS CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS.
