HEAT LOAD AROUND A TUNNEL BORER AT DEPTH.

Author(s) : BROWN A. N.

Summary

THE PAPER EXAMINES A HYPOTHETICAL CASE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE HEAT LOAD AROUND A TUNNEL BORING MACHINE AT A DEPTH OF 2,900 M BELOW SURFACE. WITHOUT COOLING, THE TEMPERATURE OF THE INTAKE AIR AT THE START OF THE BORED TUNNEL IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE FRESH AIR COURSING ALONG THE BORED TUNNEL IS PERIODICALLY COOLED WITH CHILLED SERVICE WATER IN SPRAY CARS. THE TOTAL HEAT LOAD IN THE FRONT OF THE TUNNEL IS 500 KILOWATTS. THE HEAT IS ALSO DEALT WITH USING CHILLED WATER IN THE FORM OF SPRAYS. DUST IS CONTROLLED BY SPRAYS AND A WET SCRUBBER. HOT AIR IS EXTRACTED FROM THE FACE THROUGH 2 EXHAUST COLUMNS AND DISCHARGED INTO THE UPCAST AIR SYSTEM.
