Analysis and optimization of the absorber of a diffusion absorption chiller.
Number: 0082
Author(s) : BRUNDER J., STERGIAROPOULOS K.
Summary
Diffusion absorption chillers are driven only by heat, using the natural refrigerant ammonia. To date, they are used in the small-scale cooling capacity range in refrigerators for hotels and caravaning. This paper is based on a research project on the development of a diffusion absorption chiller for climate-friendly air conditioning of small living spaces.
Previous work has shown that the mass transfer in the absorber limits the cooling capacity. In the absorber, the gaseous refrigerant is absorbed from the auxiliary gas into an aqueous solution under heat extraction. Thus, the purified auxiliary gas can absorb the refrigerant again; the evaporation of the refrigerant, thus the generation of cooling capacity becomes possible.
This paper presents new experimental investigations on the flow characteristics in the absorber. Optical investigations were carried out in a water/air system to study the influence of tube type, volume flow and pipe inclination on the phase boundary. Based on the findings, an improved absorber is installed in the diffusion absorption chiller for validation.
