Summary

Adsorption chillers are expected to have high energy-efficiency in utilizing the waste heat exhausted from a process. The objectives of this paper were to investigate the effect of fin pitch of fin and tube heat exchangers on the adsorption performance and to develop an optimally designed fin-and-tube heat exchanger for the silica gel-water adsorption chiller. In order to evaluate adsorption rates, an experimental study was performed in a batch type adsorption apparatus. The 0.5 mm particle size of silica gel with a high adsorption rate was selected as an optimal adsorbent. From the comparison of adsorption rates, it was found that the finned tube has about 21% higher value than that of the bare tube. The effect of heat and mass flux is found to be more significant in the finned tube than in the bare tube. Also, from the numerical results, the adsorption rate for 2.5 mm fin pitch is the highest compared with fin pitches 5, 7.5 and 10 mm.
