Summary

In this paper, the heat transfer performance of a single-U-pipe heat exchanger in the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system is studied. The effects of the heat conduction properties of the soil and backfill material, the temperature and velocity of the water in the pipe, the depth of the borehole, the distance between the two legs of the U-pipe and the pipe material on the heat transfer of the heat exchanger are analyzed. A physical model of the single-U-pipe heat exchanger which transfers heat with the ambient soil is established by the GAMBIT software and meshes are generated. Numerical simulations using FLUENT are carried out which give some useful results to engineering practice. Comparisons between the simulation and the experiments of the authors are given.
