Numerical performance of a novel air side fin used in heavy duty engine.

Number: pap. n. 885

Author(s) : QI Z.

Summary

In the present study, a 3-D model of a novel air side fin used in heavy duty engine cooling system was established. The fin looks like a wavy fin. There are some upheaval parts in hexagon shape in the air flow direction. A detailed 3-D model which consisted of most geometry information was introduced in CAD software. In numerical simulation model, flow and heat transfer characteristics were analyzed based on energy and momentum governing equations. The detailed geometric parameters which affected air side thermal and flow performance of the novel fin were numerically studied. The Colburn j factor and frictional f factor were calculated according to simulation results. The numerical results showed the upheaval height and upheaval pitch of hexagon shape and fin pitch influenced the fin performance dramatically.
