Application of hydrocarbon refrigerants with scroll compressors in low temperature cascade systems.

Author(s) : ADAMSON B. M.

Summary

The paper covers recent experience in ethylene/propylene cascade refrigeration systems, operating down to -90°C. These systems are being developed for recovery of hydrocarbon vapours (mainly gasoline and crude oil vapour) for environmental reasons, using low-temperature condensation. Several have been in field operation for up to four years, with more in manufacturing stage and which will be commissioned by the time of the conference. Scroll compressors have generally been used in these systems, and the paper discusses successes and problems with these compressors. It also covers some other system issues, such as oil selection and control valve selection.
