Applications and emissions of fluorocarbon gases: past, present and prospects for the future.

Author(s) : MCFARLAND M.

Summary

Following regulations on CFCs and HCFCs implemented during the last 25 years, some progress has been achieved. The net result is that only about 20% as much HCFCs and HFCs are used today as replacements in developed countries compared to a projection of what CFC use would have been. Reductions are even larger when the compounds are weighted by global warming potential (about 5% as large as projected CFC amount) or ozone depleting potential (about 1% as large as projected CFC amount). The trend indicates that the quantity of fluorocarbon gases used will decline even further as HCFCs are phased out under the Montreal Protocol.
