Summary

The short articles published here offer an overview of the various aspects of the research activities in the field. The first article summarises the results of surveys of practitioners undertaken in a number of countries to determine what are thought to be the most common and the most important faults in different types of HVAC systems. The second article discusses the economic and other benefits of installing a fault detection and diagnosis system. The following five articles provide introductions to the main types of fault detection and diagnosis methods that were considered. The last three articles present some of the results of applying fault detection and diagnosis schemes to heating systems, air-conditioning systems and chillers, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches.
