Summary
An energy-saving cold storage system for fruit storage in China was designed. The system consists of a plastic tent with a silicone membrane. A wind machine is used for precooling, with the cooling time being adjusted according to the fruit. Using the silicone membrane, the gas composition in the store is sent to the automatic control system, which adjusts the composition as necessary. Experiences with the system showed that apple storage quality was higher than in plastic film packaging (the principal fruit storage method used in China) and comparable to that achieved in controlled-atmosphere stores.
