Summary

In recent large-scale cold stores, the ceiling-mounted hairpin type evaporator has been employed for energy-saving purposes. Until now, hairpin-type evaporators have been defrosted manually. The paper deals with an automatic defrosting system for ceiling-mounted cooling pipes, using efficient defrosting brushes. The use of this defrosting system, which requires no heating of the evaporator, together with the recently applied liquid-supply control system, will ensure satisfactory heat conductivity of the cooling pipes. This reduces electricity consumption, and total operational-cost savings of up to 60% can be achieved, compared to the ordinary forced-air-flow evaporation system.
