Summary

THERMODYNAMIC POTENTIALS SUCH AS INTERNAL ENERGY, ENTHALPY, THE HELMHOLTZ POTENTIAL AND THE GIBBS FUNCTION NOT ONLY CHARACTERIZE CANONICAL FUNCTIONS BUT THEY ARE ALSO FEATURES OF ENERGY POTENTIALS AND WITH RESPECT TO BOUNDARY CONDITIONS THEIR DIFFERENCES DESCRIBE THE ENERGY TRANSFER OF AVAILABLE WORK. REVERSIBLE PROCESSES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH EXERGY, BUT FOR A SYSTEM WITH AN ADIABATIC BOUNDARY IT IS POINTLESS IN CALCULATING THE EXERGY LOSS SINCE THIS LOSS DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUATION, HENCE A DISSIPATION TERM HAS TO BE EMPLOYED.
