Summary

In regions of the world where ambient temperatures are close to the freezing point of water, most organisms have to contend with a life-threatening factor: freezing. Psychrophilic bacteria have adapted to this environment by altering their proteins and the composition of their membranes. Because of their unique properties, these micro-organisms have enormous biotechnological potential. Investigation of these bacteria has led us to wonder what conditions gave rise to life on Earth.
