Summary

This paper deals with defrosting of the frost layer on a horizontal cylinder by hot fluid from inside of the cylinder (hot gas defrosting). It is possible that the melting frost layer breaks at the angular position of about 90 deg of the cylinder, and the frost layer on the lower part of the cylinder drops off from the cylinder during defrosting. This drop-off saves the defrosting time and heat. Three factors causing the drop-off are analyzed. The prediction of a defrosting time is carried out by modelling of the melting process of frost layer and solving a thermal conduction equation.
