Basics of mechanical services noise and treatment.

Author(s) : PIROZEK P.

Summary

This paper is a brief summary of the basics of mechanical services noise, the noise paths through and around such a system and the general methods of treatment. The most common mechanical services system, consisting of a ducted fan within a plant room, is described. The typical methods of acoustic treatment to minimize these noise paths, and their method of operation, is also discussed. The three basic noise paths are airborne noise, breakout noise (noise travelling by paths other than airborne noise) and structure borne noise (noise transmitted to the structure and potentially re-radiated elsewhere). Finally, a case study highlighting the joys of identifying a noise path after construction or installation of equipment is presented.
