Summary

An active noise control system (ANC) can reduce the noise disturbance by means of a sound which creates interference with the original sound. The most common silencers are called passive as they reduce the noise by means of sound energy absorption. The concept of ANC systems is not new since the first patent was filed in 1936, but development in this field has taken place only in recent years, because of the wide and easy applications in the digital technology. Active silencers have been increasingly studied in recent years and many applications have been implemented, e.g. mufflers, aircraft and car cabins, headsets and ear muffs, and active silencers for air-conditioning systems. In this field, the ANC technique is very interesting and some manufacturers have developed active silencers. The aim of this paper is to introduce ANC systems, to show some applications and to describe in greater detail the characteristics of active silencers in air ducts, with particular reference to control strategies.
