Summary
Refers to figures on a comparison of the life cycle costs of five different types of air conditioning and two local heating systems for a 5000 m2 office building. States they show that variable air volume systems are by far the most expensive. The other systems costed were four-pipe fan-coil, reverse heat pump, three-pipe variable refrigerant volume, a multi-split system using natural ventilation, gas-fired central heating and electric space heating. In addition, states that the figures show that variable air volume takes up 50% more floor space than any other system. Electric space and cooling systems come out cheapest for space, installation, maintenance and running costs. Supplies bar charts illustrating total life cycle costs and annual energy and maintenance costs for the different systems.
