Summary
This study deals with a boiling heat transfer enhancement technique by heat transfer surface treatment. Thermal spray coatings with fine copper powder by vacuum plasma spraying method were processed on copper surface of a narrow channel. The effects of surface structure, channel orientation, i.e., flow and heating direction, on heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux were examined. Experiments was carried out for saturated flow boiling of R123 for ranges of mass flux 200-400 kg/(m2s), inlet quality 0-0.55, heat flux 25-251 kW/m2, and channel height 2 and 4 mm. It was found from a comparison on the surface structure that the heating surface with thermal spray coating could improve heat transfer coefficient. There is a little effect of channel height for each surface. Since the effect of heating surface orientation was remarkable in the low quality, low mass flux condition, an experiment with rotation of test section to change flow and heating direction against gravity was conducted. Although there was little effect for the smooth surface, horizontal flow with top heating produced the highest heat transfer coefficient for thermal spray coating. There is no marked effect in the high quality, high mass flux region. Critical heat flux could be improved by the thermal spray coating.
