Boiling mechanism in a small compact brazed plate heat exchanger (CBE) determined by using thermochromic liquid crystals.

Author(s) : CLAESSON J., PALM B.

Summary

A CBE, manufactured by SWEP International AB in Sweden, was tested as an evaporator in a small refrigerating unit at heat fluxes ranging from 6000 to 15,000 W/m2. For each heat load four tests with different superheats ranging from 1 to 10 °C have been conducted. Thermochromic liquid crystals, painted on the outside plate of the evaporator, was used for determination of the used area for evaporation and superheat, respectively, allowing calculations. These calculations show that the main boiling mechanism in a CBE is saturated nucleate boiling.
