Calculating the energy of fullerenes.

Summary

Fullerenes are very strange compounds: theorists are now extending the calculations of the energy of particular fullerenes, made in the past four years, to cage-like fullerenes with more than 6,000 identical carbon atoms in order to compare their energy with that of the onion structured isomers and to determine the most stable forms. Much theoretical work on fullerenes is to be done: determination of the electronic structure of deformable molecules, how the geometric constraints influence the electronic band structure, possibility of stuffing the hollow structures with metals, results in doping the carbon sheets with atoms such as boron, etc. J.V.
